FOURTEEN

A shaft of early morning sunlight pierced through the darkness of the room like a surgeon’s knife. Roisin moaned and screwed her eyes shut. ‘Put out the light,’ she groaned.

‘You have to wake up,’ a voice said beside her. A man’s voice.

‘Cian?’ Roisin croaked. ‘Is it time to get the boys up for school?’

‘No, it’s Declan.’ The man put his hand on her shoulder. ‘Roisin, wake up. You have to get home. Didn’t you say your boys were coming today?’

‘Today?’ She tried to focus her eyes. ‘Where am I? Who are you?’ She tried to concentrate but the throbbing in her head made it impossible. Then vague images entered her befuddled brain and she started to remember. The party, the hotel. The champagne… Declan. She looked around in the dim light. A strange room. She was in a hotel room. With Declan. How had that happened? And what had happened? The boys arriving by bus this morning… ‘Oh, nooo,’ she wailed. ‘What time is it?’ She tried to get up but the pain in her head was so bad, she had to lie down again. She turned and stared at Declan, lying fully clothed on top of the bedclothes in the vast bed. ‘Where are we? In your room?’

‘Yes.’

She recoiled in horror. ‘What? We… No, please don’t tell me that…’ She pulled the sheet up to her chin. ‘I don’t remember how I got here or what we did.’ Gripped by a wave of panic, she started to shake. ‘I can’t believe I did that.’

‘Did what?’ Declan laughed and got up. ‘Don’t worry. We didn’t do anything. You were positively comatose after all the champagne we drank. I managed to get you up here by throwing you over my shoulder in a fireman’s lift. Then I put you in bed and covered you up.’

Roisin glanced under the covers and discovered she was still wearing her party outfit, which looked decidedly wrinkly. But at least she still had her clothes on, so it wasn’t as bad as she thought. But oh God why did she drink so much champagne? She hadn’t planned to spend the night with any man, least of all Declan. ‘Was that really necessary?’

‘Yes. What else could I do?’

‘So you carried me in here, dumped me on the bed and covered me up? That was all that happened?’

‘Absolutely. I swear.’

‘But you slept in this bed, too?’

‘Yes. Fully clothed on top of the bedclothes. Couldn’t have been more chaste even if I were a monk. I like my women conscious if there’s to be any, ahem, action,’ he added, his voice full of laughter.

‘Stop laughing,’ Roisin groaned. ‘This is not funny. How do you think I feel?’

‘After all that champagne? Like shit, I would imagine. Don’t feel so hot myself, to be honest.’

‘Yeah, right. But I’m a happily married woman and I spent the night in a hotel room with a man who’s not my husband.’

‘And your husband is having some kind of fling with a German girl called Greta, you told me last night.
